10 Longest Steel Roller Coasters

When you go to an amusement park, which ride do you gravitate to? If you fancy yourself a brave soul, you will probably answer the roller coaster. But then, riding just any roller coaster will not do for those who chase adrenaline any way they can. For the most unforgettable 3 or 2 minutes of your life, you need to check out the longest roller coasters in the world. We have gathered here the 10 longest steel roller coasters so that you’d know where to go the next time you’re feeling the itch to fly.

1. Steel Dragon 2000

Located in the Nagashima Spa Land in Kuwana, Mie, Japan, this giant of a roller coaster is 8,133 feet long. This record holder in longest track length was opened to the public in 2000, the Year of the Dragon in Asia. In 2003, this ride was closed because of an incident in one of its train wheels. A guest in the water park suffered a broken hip. Three years later, the ride was opened to the public once again. This roller coaster was built by Morgan Manufacturing but this venture put them out of their business because building a roller coaster with earthquake protection proved to be very expensive.

2. The Ultimate

This steel roller coaster is at Lightwater Valley amusement park in North Yorkshire England. It was opened in 1991 and was the longest roller coaster then. This record was transferred to Steel Dragon 2000 in 2000, though. This English roller coaster is 7,442 feet long and 107 feet high. One incident related to this ride involved a deer. The animal wandered from the nearby forest onto the track. There was a collision wherein a boy had to be taken to the hospital.

3. Formula Rossa

Measuring 7,200 feet long, this is the third longest steel roller coaster in the world. This is located in Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Aside from being one of the longest in the world, the Formula Rossa is also the fastest with a top speed of 240 kilometers per hour. When you ride this roller coaster, you will need to wear protective glasses. This is because the dangers of impact with insects or airborne particulates are high. High air speeds also pose danger to the riders

4. Fujiyama

Also located in Japan, this roller coaster can be found in Fuhi-Q Highland. When this steel roller coaster was opened to the public in 1996, it was the highest as well at 259 feet. Its total length is 6,709 feet, making it the fourth longest steel roller coaster in the world. The inspiration behind the name of this structure is the famous Mount Fuji in Japan. This is one of the most beloved roller coasters in the world and has received many great reviews from many people.

5. Millennium Force

This is another steel roller coaster that is considered one of the longest in the world. With a total length of 6,595 feet, this is a ride that you will not forget for the rest of your life. This is located in Sandusky, Ohio at Cedar Point. But it’s length is not exactly the most impressive or unforgettable about the roller coaster. The Millennium Force has consistently been voted as a top-ranking roller coaster in the world by Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket awards. It has never been ranked lower than second in these awards.

6. California Screamin’

With that name, you know you will have the ride of your life in this steel roller coaster. The California Screamin’ is located at Disney California Adventure Park and is 6,702 feet long. It is the sixth longest in the world and second longest in the United States. The highest point of this roller coaster is at 120 feet. This is followed by a drop of 108 feet. This structure is unique because it looks like a wood roller coaster. It is, of course, a steel roller coaster.

7. Desperado

Opened in 1994, this was said to be the tallest steel roller coaster in the world at the time it was built. This was according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It has a 225-foot drop and a top speed of around 80 mph. The ride through this steel roller coaster takes only 2 minutes and 43 seconds but this is actually one of the longest in the world today. Its total length is 5,843 feet. This is located in Primm Valley Resorts in Primm, Nevada.

8. Gao

This particular steel roller coaster, the 8th longest in the world, is part of the Mitsui Greenland Park. This amusement park is located in Arao, Kumamoto, Japan. Its total length is 5,692. Aside from being part of this list, this roller coaster is also famous for its dinosaur-inspired design. Another notable thing about this ride is that it’s rather slow. If you find this roller coaster boring, you can always check out the other rides that this park offers. There is bound to be a ride at the Mitsui Greenland that will surely make up for the speed of the Gao.

9. Mamba

At number 9 and 10, two steel roller coasters are tied with a total length at 5,600 feet each. The Mamba is located in Kansas City, Missouri, USA at Worlds of Fun. Its maximum speed is 75 mph while its highest point is 205 feet. A ride in this roller coaster will take 3 minutes. This roller coaster opened in 1998 but if you go today, you will still be able to enjoy all elements that make this ride famous. It has a 205-foot 1st hill, a 580-degree helix with a drop on the first hill, and a 184-foot second hill.

10. Steel Force

Steel Force, often referred to as sister roller coaster of the Mamba has a ride duration of 3 minutes as well. This is located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA and opened in 1997. Its highest point is at 200 feet. Its top speed, much like the Mamba, is 75 mph. The Steel Force is the longest steel roller coaster in the East Coast of the United States.
