Top 10 Music Producers in Hip-Hop Today
10. Bangladesh
Less than two years ago Bangladesh was virtually unheard of despite having produced for a rogue’s gallery of the best hip hop artists around. Bangladesh made his name with his music but became infamous and was thrust in the public eye by his comments about superstar producer Swizz Beatz, who he called ‘irrelevant’
9. J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League
The League is a trio that has been producing in the big leagues since 2005. Their greatest successes to date have been with Mary J. Blige, when they got both the Grammy and the Billboard award for producing her album ‘the Breakthrough’. The JL are perhaps better known from their association with Rick Ross for whom they have produced most of the last 4 albums.
8. Timbaland
Though Timbaland is no longer a relevant force in today’s hip-hop Timbaland casts a long shadow. Even though a lot of younger producers have taken the market as their own and Timbaland is considered at least semi-retired he is still one of the godfathers of today’s ‘generation’ of beats, right alongside another of the great producers, Dr. Dre.
7. No ID
Many in the music business claim to ‘run it’ but Chicago ‘super producer’ and Def Jam VP No I.D. is actually right there at the top calling the shots. In the business for almost 25 years, No ID has worked with a great variety of artist but is best known for single handedly turning Common into a superstar.
6. Mike WiLL (Made It)
Mike Will is best associated with Gucci Mane and 2 Chainz and no wonder. This young up-and-comer from Atlanta has worked with a lot of people in the business but hasn’t really risen to the level of some others on this list (though he shows more potential than most). With all the no. 1 hits he’s been putting out one after another Mike WiLL really did make it but his career is just beginning.
5. Just Blaze
Just Blaze, one of the biggest names in Hip-Hop has produced Jay Z’s Blueprint 1&2 and Black Album. Though he mostly does in-house work for Roc-a-fella he has produced tracks on Eminem’s last album and looks like he’s gong to go big soon.
4. Swizz Beatz
Swizz Beatz is a celebrated producer, sharp dresser and overall Renaissance man. Not only does he produce and sing he also paints and DJs in clubs. Unlike most of the more popular producers (see above) he has a laid-back attitude and a perfectionist streak that has kept him in the studio for his latest album for four years now, unlike other artists that churn out at least one album a year not counting singles and remixes.
3. Pharrell Williams
Pharrell and Chad Hugo, the two Neptunes have produced for some of the biggest names in the business, most notably Snoop Dog and Jay-Z. He also sings, both as part of N.E.R.D. and as part of the Rap supergroup V.A. Playaz. There’s vary little else to say about Pharrell, except that he is one of the hardest working men in hip-hop and definitely one of the most talented.
2. Kanye West
Kanye is a great producer, possibly the best in the business but the ‘game’ has pretty much gotten to his head. While the Rapper/Producer has churned out more hits than Mike Tyson, like Bangladesh he did not know when to keep his mouth shut. Nowadays Kanye is more concerned with Kim Kardashian than his studio but he’s still one of the greats ‘of this generation, of this decade’.
1. Hit Boy
With a name like Hit Boy you know this guy’s good. Touted by many as the next Kanye, Hit Boy has big shoes to fill but with collaborations like his heis well on his way to the top. Hit Boy is here to stay and it’s only a matter of time until he’s as big as anybody else on this list.
